Versilia is not only sea and beaches, in the inland there are numerous cities that are interesting such as Massarosa. Located a short distance from the sea and city of Lucca, Massarosa is a strategic town from which to reach the coast.
The territory is very wide and varied, it presents an impressive variety of natural environment to explore by foot, by bicycle and by mountain bike.
A very short distance from the sea there is the Lake Massaciuccoli, a large water basin that is even a marshland with several water channels. Around the lake there is a natural trail that you can discover by foot or by bicycle and that allows you to appreciate the flora and fauna of the territory. Also overlooking the lake there is the villa of the musician Giacomo Puccini.
The Massarosa we known today developed in the XIV century, but the territory was already known by the romans. To testify the presence of the roman people, not fra form the center there are the ruins of an ancient villa and another roman building that are now part of an archeological site.
The presence of people in Massarosa is testified even by the Pieve di San Pantaleone, a church dated back to 892 or even earlier. From the church you can admire a magnificent panorama of the lake and the sea.
